Firefox 4 to rescue Mozilla from decline?

Mozilla launched its Firefox 4 on March 22, and since then it has more than doubled its shares, sources informed. It has been close to a week and such a success graph has brought good news for Mozilla, sources added.

Mozilla reached upto 3.7% from 1.4% since March 22. On the first day of Firefox 4’s launch it was downloaded 7.1 million times and unofficially saw 8.75 million downloads on the second day, sources reported.

Firefox was losing share in the browser market but with version 4 it has progressed almost two and a half times.

In comparison Internet Explorer’s newest version reportedly is off to a slow start as it only increased six tenths of a percentage point of usage share. But still IE9 too has done better with double the share in two weeks after its launch.

Though both the new versions of the browsers are doing well, experts are not sure if these numbers have taken a toll on their older versions usage shares.

According to sources, Both Mozilla and Microsoft are losing to Google and Apple, and any good numbers comes as a ray of hope for them

HTC Desire HD To Hit India Soon

It was quite a while back when we saw Flipkart lining the Desire HD smartphone from HTC for preorders. Back then, there wasn’t any official launch of the smartphone, but news doing the rounds now talks about the Desire HD releasing soon.

Namaste India…

Sources say that HTC’s Desire HD will be touching Indian shores, something which was quite imminent. To sum it up, the smartphone will arrive hot on the heels of the HD7 and 7 Mozart. Keeping that aside for the moment, let’s take a quick view of what the Desire HD has to offer.

The Desire HD is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocking at 1 GHz and the graphics gets a boost thanks to the Adreno GPU. The smartphone will be running Android Froyo with the HTC Sense User Interface on top. Let’s take a look under the hood of the Desire HD:

  • 4.3-inch LCD Capacitive Touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, HSDPA, HSUPA, A-GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP

The run-of-the-mill features of the Desire HD include an Accelerometer, Proximity Sensor and a Digital Compass. The smartphone’s camera can shoot HD videos in 720p. Apart from that, the Desire HD also has integrated Facebook and Twitter applications and Google Search, Maps and Gmail.

The Desire HD is priced somewhere around Rs. 28,000 and we really wish to see it reach India quickly.

Facebook, Google to test IPv6

LONDON: Web addresses are likely to run out as soon as November and to raise public awareness Google and Facebook have decided to switch their websites to a new system for one day in June.

On June 8, a whole bunch of web giants, including Google, Facebook, Yahoo, will turn on a new way of running web addresses, reports the Telegraph.

The system, called IPv6, has been designed to stop the world running out of the web addresses that underlie the locating of websites and devices.

As of now, only 0.2 per cent of web users have access to the new protocol, however. ‘World IPv6’ Day is designed to encourage its adoption.

Vint Cerf, one of the web’s founding fathers, is leading a global campaign to encourage web service providers and IT managers to switch from the current system, IPv4, to IPv6.

The new standard offers many trillions of new web addresses, but cannot be accessed from modems and routers that only use IPv4.

It is likely, however, that most of the changes needed will take place without consumers losing access to any part of the web because they will be part of the standard software and hardware upgrade cycle.

The availability of new web addresses will, it is hoped, allow more connected devices, such as tablet computers, as well as permitting more mundane devices to gain web addresses.

Writing on the Google Blog, Network Engineer Lorenzo Colitti said, “Google has been supporting IPv6 since early 2008, when we first began offering search over IPv6. Since then we’ve brought IPv6 support to YouTube and have been helping ISPs enable Google over IPv6 by default for their users. On World IPv6 Day, we’ll be taking the next big step. Together with major web companies such as Facebook and Yahoo!, we will enable IPv6 on our main websites for 24 hours.”

He added, however, that “Our current measurements suggest that the vast majority of users will be unaffected. However, in rare cases, users may experience connectivity problems, often due to misconfigured or misbehaving home network devices.”
